Audi wins GT Class at 2013 Rolex 24 Daytona

It was only last year that Audi made its debut at Grand AM Rolex Sports Car Series GT category. This was achieved with two customer R8 supercars. Today, a year later, it is the same Audi R8 Grand AM that arrived at the Daytona International Speedway to capture the GT class win for the 2013 season.

Audi put up a spectacular performance at the 2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona, doubling its force with the R8 Grand AM vehicles where in all four vehicles will be campaigned for customer teams. The Audi R8 driver lineup included DTM Series stars Felipe Albuquerque, Edoardo Mortara, Oliver Jarvis, Frank Biela and Markus Winkelhock.

Pit crew members from Audi Sport Team Joest operations serviced one of the R8 Grand AM vehicles. 65% of each lap was driven at full throttle wherein the R8 Grand AM was powered by a 5.2 liter V10 FSI engine.

Car Seat Safety Tips

Use a rear-facing car seat for babies under 2:
  • For the best possible protection, keep your baby in a rear-facing child safety seat in a back seat for as long as possible—up to the height or weight limit of the particular seat. Recent recommendations (March 2011) by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) urge parents to keep their babies rear-facing up to the second birthday. The old rule "12-months-and-20-pounds" that many parents cite when turning their child forward in the car is actually the minimum size and age requirement.
  • Keep babies rear-facing in a convertible seat until they reach age 2 and the maximum height or weight allowed by the manufacturer. For many children that will be 30, 35 or even 40 pounds. Rear-facing occupants are safest.
When using an infant or convertible seat:
  • Use your baby’s car seat rear-facing and semi-reclined no more than 45 degrees, so the baby’s head stays in contact with the seat and the baby’s airway stays open. Read the car seat instructions.
  • Make sure the buckled harness straps that keep your baby properly positioned and secured in the car seat fit snuggly. Loose harness straps don’t provide maximum protection. Be sure the harness is tight, so you cannot pinch extra webbing at the shoulder.
  • Position the shoulder straps through the slots at or below your rear-facing baby’s shoulders.
  • Adjust the chest clip to armpit level.
  • Use either the car’s seat belt or LATCH system to lock the car seat into the car. Do not use both systems at the same time.
  • Your car seat should not move more than one inch side to side or front to back. Grab the car seat at the safety belt path or LATCH path to test it.
  • All car seats have an expiration date. Generally, it is six years, but contact the manufacturer of the seat to find out what the expiration date is for your specific seat.
  • Never buy a used car seat if you do not know its full history and never use a car seat that has been in a crash.
  • Do not use any products in the car seat that did not come from the manufacturer. Car seat fabrics meet strict fire safety codes. Add-on toys can injure your child in a crash.
  • Find where the frontal airbags are in your vehicle by checking the owner’s manual. Never put a rear-facing car seat in front of an active airbag. Children are always safest in a back seat.
  • Have your car seat checked by a currently certified child passenger safety technician to make sure it is properly installed.
  • Never leave children alone in a car.
Take the next step to a forward-facing car seat when your child is 2 and has outgrown the height or weight limit of his or her rear-facing convertible car seat and you answer “yes” to either question:
  • Does your child exceed the car seat’s rear-facing height or weight limits?
  • Is your child’s head within one inch of the car seat top?
Tips on properly installing & using forward-facing car seats:
  • Use a forward-facing car seat correctly and until the harness no longer fits (convertible or combo seat) in a back seat every time your toddler rides in a car. Many harnesses today serve kids to 50, 60, 80 or even 100 pounds.
  • Use the right car seat with a harness for your toddler’s weight and height. Toddlers are weighed and measured at every doctor visit, so be sure to keep track.
  • Put harnesses through the slots so they are even with or above the forward-facing child’s shoulders. Some seats require use of the top slots when the seat is forward-facing, so check instructions.
  • Be sure the buckled harness is tight, so you cannot pinch extra webbing at the shoulder.
  • Adjust the chest clip to armpit level.
  • Use the car’s safety belt or LATCH system to lock the car seat into the car. Do not use both at the same time.  Be sure to use the top tether
  • Your car seat should not move more than one inch side to side or front to back. Grab the car seat at the safety belt path or LATCH path to test it.
  • Use a top tether if your vehicle and car seat are both so equipped. Tethers limit the forward motion of your child’s head in a crash.
  • Have your car seat checked by a currently certified child passenger safety technician to make sure it’s properly installed.
  • Do not allow children to play with unused seat belts. Treat them as you would any rope or cord.
  • Be sure all occupants wear seat belts correctly every time. Children learn from adult role models.
  • If you have a heavier or taller child, find a car seat with a harness that fits larger children. Some seats hold children up to 80 or even 100 pounds.
  • Restrain all children in the age- and weight-appropriate child restraint when in a car with the motor running. That will limit access to power windows. Never leave children unattended.
Take the next step to a booster seat when you answer “yes” to any of these questions:
  • Does your child exceed the car seat’s height or weight limits?
  • Are your child’s shoulders above the car seat’s top harness slots?
  • Are the tops of your child’s ears above the top of the car seat?

Audi Envisions A Future Of Laser Brakes

Lights are some of the most fundamental safety technology on cars. They allow us to drive at night. They signal the people behind us that we’re braking. But could we do better? Could we leverage lasers and LEDs to signal more information than “my headlights are on” and “STOP!” Audi thinks so.

The German car maker has released a series of new car light concepts that look straight out of Hollywood. The most shocking may be the laser tail light. The word “laser” is not just some marketing gimmick. Rather, the tail lights shoot real laser beams out toward the ground. This opens the door for additional indicators on the road’s surface, and as lasers glow more brightly in vapor, it solves the whole visibility in fog issue.

Another rear-end concept is what Audi calls the Swarm. It turns the car’s rear lights into a giant unibrow-style display. “Innumerable” points of light swim through the image like fish. What’s neat, though, is that this school can signal all sorts of information about the car’s movement. Rather than turn signals and brakes, the Swarm depicts movement as a gradient. Sure it leans left or right with turns, but the Swarm also accelerates with the speed of the car, depicting the otherwise intangible velocity of the traffic flow. It’s basically an abstract infographic for driving.

2014 Audi RS 7 Sportback Revs Up 2013 Detroit Auto Show

The 2014 Audi RS 7 Sportback, the high-performance take on the Audi A7, broke cover at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show on Monday.

The 560-horsepower Audi RS 7 Sportback is expected to arrive in U.S. showrooms in the fall. Pricing was not announced, but the RS 7 is expected to be priced higher than the A7 on which it is based. The 2013 Audi A7 starts at $60,995, including an $895 destination charge.

The RS 7 Sportback turns in impressive performance numbers, according to Audi. The car sprints from 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 190 mph. While the EPA has yet to list official fuel economy numbers for the RS 7, Audi estimates it will return an average of 24 mpg.

The RS 7 Sportback is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine linked to a standard eight-speed automatic transmission. It comes standard with quattro all-wheel drive and 20-inch forged lightweight wheels.

Buyers will get a choice of 10 exterior colors, including matte Daytona gray. Two styling packages, including a carbon styling package, further customize the car's look.

Audi makes a new version of the SQ5 that is headed for the United States!

The Audi SQ5: Aluminum And Gasoline For America

Audi has made a new toy for the Detroit Auto Show. When we first saw the SQ5 we noted it was the first S model with a diesel engine, which means we'd probably never get it. Now Audi's gone and made a new version for America with a free-revving supercharged V6 with two intercoolers. Sounds good already.

The 3.0 TFSI in the new-for-America SQ5 will give you 354 hp from 6000 rpm, while the 346.65 lb-ft peak torque (gotta be exact about it) is all yours two thousand revs earlier. Thanks to the sport-mode of the Tiptronic gearbox and the massive traction the Quattro all-wheel drive provides, 0-62 mph is done in just 5.3 seconds. While the top speed is limited to 155 mph, when you feel less cocky, the SQ5 will do 21 mpg. Not bad for a sporty CUV.

From the outside, all the usual Audi elements are there. The technocrat grill between the standard xenon headlamps with the LED daytime driving lights makes sure the Audi face burns into everyone's brain, while the two dual exhausts and the imitated diffuser at the back are just asking for a drag race at the lights. The rear spoiler and "V6 T" badges round off the package, but if that's not enough, 21-inch wheels and two crystal-effect finishes by the name of Estoril Blue and Panther Black are optional.

The interior is as black as the night standard, but the headliner can be ordered with "Moon Silver." The seats are wrapped in a mixture of Pearl Nappa leather and Alcantara, and four additional colours are optional. To match the shiny pedals, the inlays are made of brushed aluminium, but carbon-fiber, piano black or a layered wooden finish are also available.

The SQ5 is scheduled to arrive at U.S. dealerships in the third quarter of 2013, with 59.33 cu ft of trunk space, in case you were wondering.
