Audi is always looking toward the future, this time planning a four-seater capable of getting 282 mpg!
282mpg Audi city car planned
Wolfgang Durheimer, Audi’s new head of technical development told Autocar that the car, known internally as the Audi ‘1.0-litre car’, will be based on the platform of the current A1 and will be an ‘affordable’ full four-seater that offers ‘all the creature comforts of a normal car, including climate control’.
Although details are still sparse, what promises to be the most economical family car ever sold will have electrical assistance, but it won’t use the two-cylinder diesel engine seen in the two-seat VW XLR-1 prototype.
Durheimer says the 1.0-litre car can use a modified version of the A1’s steel platform “because weight is not the biggest engineering challenge with this project”. However, it is expected that the car’s interior will be radically lighter than normal, as will the suspension system.
Audi could use a new type of injection-moulded carbonfibre for some components, which can be made in just two and half minutes, hugely more rapid process than conventional carbonfibre manufacturing. It’s thought that the project is at least three years from the showroom.

We want everyone to stay as safe as possible this season, so we wanted to share these winter driving tips!
Driving safely on icy roads
- Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.
- Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.
- Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
- Keep your lights and windshield clean.
- Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills.
- Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
- Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.
- Don't pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The drivers have limited visibility, and you're likely to find the road in front of them worse than the road behind.
- Don't assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads.
If your rear wheels skid...
- Take your foot off the accelerator.
- Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they're sliding right, steer right.
- If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.
- If you have standard brakes, pump them gently.
- If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse — this is normal.
If your front wheels skid...
- Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but don't try to steer immediately.
- As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in "drive" or release the clutch, and accelerate gently.
If you get stuck...
- Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper.
- Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.
- Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out.
- Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car.
- Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction.
- Try rocking the vehicle. (Check your owner's manual first — it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you're in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.

Audi's new fuel efficient line-up certainly gives us something to look forward to!
L.A. Auto Show preview: Audi confirms four new diesel models
Four rings, four diesels. It's an easy way to remember what Audi has planned for next week's Los Angeles Auto Show.
The company announced Monday that it will be unveiling a quartet of fuel-efficient oil-burners at the L.A. Auto Show that are not yet available in the U.S. The models getting TDI diesel variants are the A6, A7, A8, and Q5. All four will share a 3-liter turbocharged V-6.Exact output has been announced only for the A8. In that full-size sedan, Audi says it will have 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, enough to move the car from zero to 60 in 6.4 seconds. It will do this, Audi points out, while getting an estimated 24 miles per gallon in the city and a dramatic 36 mpg on the highway. The A8 will go on sale in spring 2013.
The other three getting the diesel engine option are the mid-size A6 sedan, its mechanically identical yet more expressively styled A7 four-door coupe and the Q5 crossover SUV. These models will go on sale in fall 2013.This engine is already in the updated 2013 Q7 TDI, Audi's seven-passenger crossover. In this application, fuel economy is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway.

Audi's head of design gives us a glimpse into what we can expect from the brand in the future
CAR interviews head of Audi design Wolfgang Egger
After years of producing near-identical looking Audis which even we struggle to distinguish, Ingolstadt is about to embark on a range redesign. CAR magazine caught up with Audi's head of design Wolfgang Egger for a quick interview to find out what he has planned for the four-ringed executive brand in the coming years.
CAR: The Audi brand is about to reinvent itself. Such a process typically starts with design.
Wolfgang Egger: 'Indeed. We are going to restructure the design department and advance our design philosophy. On the one hand, this means establishing more creative working methods and more efficient processes. On the other hand, we are about to implement an evolutionary design language. The next model generations from Audi will in all segments fuse exterior and interior design to a more homogenous whole.'
Will Audi's controversial single-frame, goatee-beard grille survive?
'Sure. The single-frame is now part of the Audi design DNA. But it will become more authentic, innovative, three-dimensional and evolutionary. For instance, there are going to be different grille themes for the A-, R- and Q-ranges as well as different variations for the base, S and RS models. Just look at the next Q-generation where the frame becomes much more sculptural. It will always be made of metal, but instead of chrome we might use anodized aluminium, brushed steel or some sort of high-tech coating.'
You mentioned streamlined processes for designing future Audis. Can you give a concrete example?
'In the past, we did the first sketches four-and-a-half years prior to SOP [start-of-production]. As the next step, we built models, then the selection was narrowed down to a few finalists, and eventually we had a winner. This was a logical and pragmatic sequence, but it was not always sufficiently quick and flexible. In the future, the initial concept phase will play a more important role at Audi. Work starts in the so-called Atelier where five teams are defining a given new car project. Each team has between two and 20 members, all team leaders are on the same hierarchical level. The goal of the Atelier approach is ultimate creativity. To push the envelope, there is constant interaction between the teams. The only thing that matters is the perfect end result. Sometimes, we get there quite quickly, but in nine out of ten cases it is hard work.'
How does the transformation from concept to production work at Audi?
'As soon as the proposal submitted by the Atelier has been accepted, project management and design management take over. There are no changes to those who are in charge. Achim Badstübner is in control of the exterior, Enzo Rothfuss masterminds the interior, Simona Falcinella is number one for colour and trim.'
Where does the long-range radar of advanced design fit in the new scheme of things?
'Led by Steve Lewis, our Concept Design Studio in Munich is now free to look even further into the future. Their work is actually more and more detached from specific upcoming Audi products. After all, we must also investigate the constantly changing context of sustainable mobility, the socio-cultural framework, the economic and environmental implications. With the help of trend scouts, materials experts and drivetrain wizards, we are trying to predict what makes the automotive world tick in 15 to 20 years' time.'

If you are looking for ways to keep your Audi performing at its best, follow these driving tips!
Drive with care everyday
- Do not race your car’s engine during start-up.This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside.
- Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation.
- Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea. The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components.
- Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped.
- Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs.
- Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber.
- When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.
- Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

The new Audi V-8 has come to town and is speeding past the competition going 0-60 in 3.5 seconds!
Audi’s new twin-turbo 4.0-liter, aka EA 82.
I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the EA in the new 420-hp, 406-lb-ft S6 and S7, and the 520-hp, 481-lb-ft S8 , and, well, whoa. Try 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and the quarter in 11.8 at 118.3 mph. Yes, it’s that quick.
RK: Did you decide from the start that the new-gen Audi V-8 was going to be a 4.0-liter turbo?
JK: It was very clear that an eight-cylinder would have 4.0-liter displacement, because we have normally 500 cubic-centimeters volume in each cylinder — as in our 2.0-liter turbo engines — and it makes sense to make it in this way. We had a lot of discussion what would be the right way to have the turbo — outside or in the vee. That was a big question at the beginning and, from our point of view, this position of the turbocharger in the vee has so much advantage. You have very short way from the turbo over the intercooler into the engine. A small volume and, therefore, the throttle response is very good. Turbo lag is none.
JK: Every time you have this discussion, because a few people love naturally aspirated engine with high revs and other people love turbocharged engines. From my point of view, for a real super sports car, the naturally aspirated engine, with this unbelievable throttle response and sound, is crying the high tune — that’s the R8.
RK: From the start of the Audi 4.0-liter project to now, how long was the process?
JK: Normally, we have two phases. One is the concept phase. This starts nearly four years before a project goes to start of production. And this concept phase, we have roughly 15 months. And after 15 months, you have everything together. You know how the engine will be, and you have your variables, your financial variables and so on. And then comes the decision. OK, is it good enough to make the development of the serious engines? In this case, you can say three and a half years.
RK: And how many test kilometers?
JK: I would say 10 million kilometers.
