Audi Q2 Concept Tipped For Paris Auto Show Debut

Audi_grill

Though a production version isn’t expected to hit the streets until sometime in 2015, we could get a preview of Audi’s upcoming Q2  crossover as early as this week’s 2012 Paris Auto Show.

The information was first reported by What Car?, which claims the Q2 will share its underpinnings with the Volkswagen Cross Polo model already on sale in Europe.

The Cross Polo is essentially a toughened up version of the Polo hatchback, which itself shares a platform with the Audi A1.

You may recall that the Q2 was originally thought to be labeled a Q1, since it will have more in common with the A1 rather than the proposed A2 model, whose development has been delayed. The decision to call it a Q2 is likely due to the larger footprint it will offer, compared to the smaller A1.

Base Q2 models will be front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive with an electronic rear differential will be available on higher trim models. Even equipped with all-wheel drive, the Q2 will only be capable of light off-roading. This vehicle will be aimed more at young urbanites who prefer the taller ride height of an SUV but do most of their driving in busy urban areas.

In terms of styling, expect to see a cross between the A1 and Q3, though with enough unique elements to make the Q2 distinct. Powertrains should be shared with the A1, which means a range of turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline and diesel units.

We don’t have long to wait now, as the 2012 Paris Auto Show opens its doors to the press on Thursday. While you wait for all the reveals, check out our dedicated show page for the latest coverage.

Audi chooses San José Chiapa, Mexico for new North American plant

Q5

Audi has announced that it has settled on San José Chiapa, Mexico for its newest production facility in North America.

The new plant will house production for the successor to the current Audi Q5 after the facility is up and running in 2016. Expected annual output capacity is projected to be 150,000 units. Construction work on the plant buildings is slated to begin in mid 2013.

After declaring its intention to build a new factory in North America earlier this year, the German automaker reviewed more than a dozen locations before settling on the municipality in the Mexican state of Puebla. Overall site conditions, logistic links and infrastructure and a good supply of well-qualified employees were chief amongst the reasons for the selection of San José Chiapa. It also probably doesn't hurt that parent company Volkswagen already has a plant in the area.

Audi maintains that the Mexican plant will help it meet "key requirements" of its overall growth strategy through 2020, including steady product supply to the North American market.

Said Audi General Works Council Chairman, Peter Mosch, "The new location in Mexico will unlock further growth for us, and also protect capacity at the main plants." Mosch continued, "The latter will increasingly step into the role of lead plants for our technologies in developing modern production methods, using new materials and joining techniques, and with regard to electric mobility."

The Audi Allroad is making a return to the US!

Audi_allroad_2013

Canvass driveways on your street. What do we see? I bet you it’s rows and rows of crossover vehicles and SUVs.

Audi has decided that for people who don’t want to exactly blend in, it would bring the Allroad back to the U.S. for the first time since 2005. Based on test drives in the Colorado Rockies, and around Denver, I can tell you that this is a great wagon for covering long interstate distances, while hauling a fair amount of stuff, in a luxurious setting.

Replacing the slow-selling A4 Avant here in the states, the Allroad is ever so slightly bigger than the A4 — a fraction of an inch when it comes to length and width, and more than 2 inches taller. Ground clearance is 7.1 inches, but this vehicle really isn’t ready to seriously go off-roading, despite its name. Yet Audi’s all-wheel drive Quattro system will get you through winter snow storms where other makes would leave you sidelined.

Under the hood, the Allroad smartly gets around with a 211-horsepower turbocharged in-line 4 that packs 258 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm, tied to an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Audi says the Allroad will hit 60 mph from a dead start in 6.5 seconds and top out at 130 mph. The combo is EPA rated at 20/27 mpg on premium gasoline.

On the highway, the Allroad is a silent partner cruising quietly at anything approximating the legal limit. Anyone who has driven an Audi lately will feel right at home. It was easy to get comfortable in the standard leather seat that was a dozen ways adjustable on the driver’s side and eight ways amenable on the passenger side. Key instruments were an easy read; major controls a short reach away; and fit, finish and materials were of excellent quality.

Two adults could fit in the rear. And as is common with a wagon; the seats fold down for additional storage space. It totaled 27.6 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 50.5 with them dow, which means two people could haul a bunch of stuff in this wagon. While the interior of the test car was black, a huge sunroof helped keep things bright and cheery. The “Panoramic Sunroof with Power Sunshade” is standard equipment.

Equipment wise, all the usual suspects were present — automatic climate control, power tailgate, an audio system that will make all the right connections music-wise, navigation with voice control and so forth.

Optional equipment packages can quickly drive up the price. Just two of them on the test car totaled $6,350 – the Premium Plus and MMI/Navigation packages. That and other options plus delivery raised the out-the-door price to $47,870 from a base price on the test car of $39,600.

For that, you get a slick looking luxury wagon, all-wheel drive, good power and handling, and the ability to silently brag to the neighborhood that you don't play follow the leader.
