Its design, performance, and fuel efficiency help the RS 5 take home this coveted award!

Tues_audi

Audi RS 5 Wins Men's Journal 'Gear of the Year' Award

The 2013 Audi RS 5 has been named a winner of the annual 'Gear of the Year' awards by Men's Journal. Featured in the magazine's December 2012 issue, the Audi RS 5 was honored for its athletic design, high-end performance, practical drivability and class-leading fuel efficiency. Each year, experts from Men's Journal test hundreds of new products from a variety of categories, including, automotive, technology, sports and fitness and more.

"Consumers are clearly responding to the outstanding performance, elegant styling and athletic identity of the Audi RS 5. Nearly all RS 5 models have already sold since it was introduced in August of this year," said Scott Keogh, President, Audi of America. "We are thrilled to have been honored by Men's Journal with a 2012 'Gear of the Year' award, a testament to the design and power of the RS 5."

The Audi RS 5 features a high-revving 4.2-liter V8 that delivers 450 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque, propelling the RS 5 from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. A seven-speed S tronic® transmission with launch control enhances performance, boosting the RS 5 to an electronically-governed top track speed of 174 mph. Efficiency is also enhanced with a class-leading 19 city / 30 highway / 22 combined fuel economy without the penalty of a gas guzzler tax.

The Audi drive select system adjusts the vehicle's transmission shift characteristics, throttle response, dynamic steering and sports differential. The driver can select from auto, comfort, dynamic and individual settings, making the RS 5 equally adept for a weekend excursion or a day on the track.

The self-locking crown-gear center differential is compact and lightweight and attains a high efficiency ratio. Thanks to its package of plates, the differential can vary the distribution of torque widely between the front and rear axles. If necessary, up to 70 percent can flow to the front or as much as 85 percent toward the tail end. The 40:60 ratio of the standard rear-biased configuration ensures sporty handling. This new differential operates in conjunction with electronic torque vectoring. As a perfect complement to the new quattro® drivetrain, the sport differential at the rear axle is standard.

Audi's RS 5 Coupe: A force to be reckoned with

Audi's all-new 2013 RS 5 Coupe is sophisticated, fast, gorgeous and bad to the bone. The RS 5 adds a heightened performance level to Audi's A5 stable which consists of several models including: the A5 Coupe, A5 Cabriolet, S5 Coupe, S5 Cabriolet and now, the RS 5 Coupe.

The 2013 Audi RS 5 Coupe is truly a force to be reckoned with, considering that it is propelled by a high-revving, naturally aspirated 4.2-liter, DOHC, 32-valve, naturally aspirated V8 engine with electronic fuel injection that delivers 450 horsepower at 8,250 rpm while developing 317 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine is coupled to a seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission with sport and manual shift modes and launch control program. It's the most fuel efficient car in its class and does not incur a gas guzzler tax despite the high-revving engine and it's capability of moving from 0-60 mph in a mere 4.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 174 mph.

The engine is positioned up front in a longitudinal orientation and transfers power to the ground via Audi's permanent quattro all-wheel-drive system. There's also a newly-developed crown-gear center differential that contributes to the car's enhanced performance.

The all-new RS 5 was developed by Quattro GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Audi AG. It is a classically and elegantly styled coupe that comes with track-tested performance and the latest state-of-the-art technologies that Audi has to offer. Fuel economy is well within reason considering the car's performance output -- 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.

The RS 5 may be operated in a fully automatic mode, or the driver can shift using either the gearshift lever or steering wheel mounted paddles. The driver is able to select from auto, comfort, dynamic and individual Audi Drive Select system settings, which adjusts the vehicle's transmission shift characteristics; throttle response, dynamic steering and sports differential. The RS 5 stands ready for either a pleasant, but spirited weekend drive or for a stint on the track at the drop of a hat.

The RS 5 rides on sport-tuned suspension componentry that's 0.8-inches lower than its A5 stablemates, and rolls on either 19-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels as standard fare or optionally available 20-inch, five-blade spoke alloys, shod with performance rubber.

Bringing the RS 5 Coupe to a halt are four-wheel, internally vented discs with ABS and ESC and an integrated Sport mode that may be switched off entirely. Audi is able to fit the RS 5 with 15-inch front ceramic carbon-fiber discs for enhanced braking performance.

Visually, the RS 5 Coupe displays stylish new clear-cut accent lines, adaptive xenon plus headlamps with a sweeping strip of LED daytime running lights, oversized air inlets for improved cooling of the engine, front brakes and radiators. The newly designed front bumper tapers downward into a splitter, which is available in an aluminum-optic paint treatment. The fenders are flared, featuring crisp horizontal upper edges, and side sills display angular caps. The single-frame grille trim strips, side windows and outside mirrors sport a matte aluminum look. In the rear, twin oval exhaust pipes are integrated into the bumper, delivering an authoritative performance note. A sport-tuned exhaust with black oval tips is optionally available. A large diffuser protrudes upward at a pronounced angle, and there's an integrated rear decklid spoiler that rises automatically at 75 mph and lowers at 50 mph. It may also be manually activated at the touch of a button.

Moving to the inside, power-adjustable sport seats provide supportive side bolstering and integrated head restraints. Nappa leather is standard fare, with optional leather/Alcantara®, seating surfaces and rock gray seat piping adding to the interior's sporty flavor. An RS logo, 3-spoke, flat-bottomed steering wheel further contributes to the car's sense of performance purpose. Carbon fiber trim accents make a performance statement as well. The pedals and footrest are trimmed in aluminum, with aluminum trim adorning the doors as well. The driver information system includes a lap timer and there's a launch control system for fast, efficient off-the-line get-aways.

Comfort and convenience features abound including: Audi's parking system with rearview camera and audible alarm, Audi's adaptive cruise control, Side Assist and Dynamic steering. There's Audi connect and Audi MMI Navigation plus featuring high resolution Google Earth imagery. Audi connect provides an industry first factory integration of Wi-Fi® service and connections for up to eight Wi-Fi devices, allowing continued connectivity even when on the move.

Audi Q7 SUV receives award in the Premium Midsize UV category

Audi today announced that the 2013 Audi Q7 received the Residual Value Award in the Premium Midsize Utility Vehicle category from ALG, the industry benchmark for residual values and depreciation data. Each year, ALG's Residual Value Awards recognize the vehicles and brands that deliver a complete product experience to its customers—exceptional vehicle quality, strong brand desirability and long-term reliability."Audi not only produces exciting and luxurious vehicles, but vehicles that hold their value over time," said Scott Keogh, President, Audi of America. "The ALG Residual Value Award is a testament to the value of the Q7 model line which is a great example of Audi design, functionality and progressive luxury."

"The Audi Q7 has held a crucial role in the expansion and strengthening of the Audi brand," said Larry Dominique, President of ALG. "Combining sophisticated styling, generous passenger capacity and strong performance attributes with low incentives and consistently high transaction prices, the Q7 delivers the best of both luxury and consumer value."

The seven-passenger Audi Q7 exceeds driver and passenger expectations for functionality and comfort. ALG Award winners are determined through careful study of the competition in each segment, historical vehicle performance and industry trends. Vehicle quality, production levels relative to demand, and pricing and marketing strategies remain the key factors that affect ALG's residual value forecasts. Audi is always looking toward the future, this time planning a four-seater capable of getting 282 mpg!

Tues_audi

282mpg Audi city car planned

Wolfgang Durheimer, Audi’s new head of technical development told Autocar that the car, known internally as the Audi ‘1.0-litre car’, will be based on the platform of the current A1 and will be an ‘affordable’ full four-seater that offers ‘all the creature comforts of a normal car, including climate control’.

Although details are still sparse, what promises to be the most economical family car ever sold will have electrical assistance, but it won’t use the two-cylinder diesel engine seen in the two-seat VW XLR-1 prototype.

Durheimer says the 1.0-litre car can use a modified version of the A1’s steel platform “because weight is not the biggest engineering challenge with this project”. However, it is expected that the car’s interior will be radically lighter than normal, as will the suspension system.

Audi could use a new type of injection-moulded carbonfibre for some components, which can be made in just two and half minutes, hugely more rapid process than conventional carbonfibre manufacturing. It’s thought that the project is at least three years from the showroom.

We want everyone to stay as safe as possible this season, so we wanted to share these winter driving tips!

Audi_winter

Driving safely on icy roads

  1. Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.
  2. Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.
  3. Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
  4. Keep your lights and windshield clean.
  5. Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills.
  6. Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
  7. Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.
  8. Don't pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The drivers have limited visibility, and you're likely to find the road in front of them worse than the road behind.
  9. Don't assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads.

If your rear wheels skid...

  1. Take your foot off the accelerator.
  2. Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they're sliding right, steer right.
  3. If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.
  4. If you have standard brakes, pump them gently.
  5. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse — this is normal.

If your front wheels skid...

  1. Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but don't try to steer immediately.
  2. As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in "drive" or release the clutch, and accelerate gently.

If you get stuck...

  1. Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper.
  2. Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.
  3. Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out.
  4. Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car.
  5. Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction.
  6. Try rocking the vehicle. (Check your owner's manual first — it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you're in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.

Audi's new fuel efficient line-up certainly gives us something to look forward to!

Audi

L.A. Auto Show preview: Audi confirms four new diesel models

Four rings, four diesels. It's an easy way to remember what Audi has planned for next week's Los Angeles Auto Show.

The company announced Monday that it will be unveiling a quartet of fuel-efficient oil-burners at the L.A. Auto Show that are not yet available in the U.S.

The models getting TDI diesel variants are the A6, A7, A8, and Q5. All four will share a 3-liter turbocharged V-6.

Exact output has been announced only for the A8. In that full-size sedan, Audi says it will have 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, enough to move the car from zero to 60 in 6.4 seconds. It will do this, Audi points out, while getting an estimated 24 miles per gallon in the city and a dramatic 36 mpg on the highway. The A8 will go on sale in spring 2013.

The other three getting the diesel engine option are the mid-size A6 sedan, its mechanically identical yet more expressively styled A7 four-door coupe and the Q5 crossover SUV. These models will go on sale in fall 2013.

This engine is already in the updated 2013 Q7 TDI, Audi's seven-passenger crossover. In this application, fuel economy is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway.

Audi's head of design gives us a glimpse into what we can expect from the brand in the future

Audi

CAR interviews head of Audi design Wolfgang Egger

After years of producing near-identical looking Audis which even we struggle to distinguish, Ingolstadt is about to embark on a range redesign. CAR magazine caught up with Audi's head of design Wolfgang Egger for a quick interview to find out what he has planned for the four-ringed executive brand in the coming years.

CAR: The Audi brand is about to reinvent itself. Such a process typically starts with design.

Wolfgang Egger: 'Indeed. We are going to restructure the design department and advance our design philosophy. On the one hand, this means establishing more creative working methods and more efficient processes. On the other hand, we are about to implement an evolutionary design language. The next model generations from Audi will in all segments fuse exterior and interior design to a more homogenous whole.'

Will Audi's controversial single-frame, goatee-beard grille survive?

'Sure. The single-frame is now part of the Audi design DNA. But it will become more authentic, innovative, three-dimensional and evolutionary. For instance, there are going to be different grille themes for the A-, R- and Q-ranges as well as different variations for the base, S and RS models. Just look at the next Q-generation where the frame becomes much more sculptural. It will always be made of metal, but instead of chrome we might use anodized aluminium, brushed steel or some sort of high-tech coating.'

You mentioned streamlined processes for designing future Audis. Can you give a concrete example?

'In the past, we did the first sketches four-and-a-half years prior to SOP [start-of-production]. As the next step, we built models, then the selection was narrowed down to a few finalists, and eventually we had a winner. This was a logical and pragmatic sequence, but it was not always sufficiently quick and flexible. In the future, the initial concept phase will play a more important role at Audi. Work starts in the so-called Atelier where five teams are defining a given new car project. Each team has between two and 20 members, all team leaders are on the same hierarchical level. The goal of the Atelier approach is ultimate creativity. To push the envelope, there is constant interaction between the teams. The only thing that matters is the perfect end result. Sometimes, we get there quite quickly, but in nine out of ten cases it is hard work.'

How does the transformation from concept to production work at Audi?

'As soon as the proposal submitted by the Atelier has been accepted, project management and design management take over. There are no changes to those who are in charge. Achim Badstübner is in control of the exterior, Enzo Rothfuss masterminds the interior, Simona Falcinella is number one for colour and trim.'

Where does the long-range radar of advanced design fit in the new scheme of things?

'Led by Steve Lewis, our Concept Design Studio in Munich is now free to look even further into the future. Their work is actually more and more detached from specific upcoming Audi products. After all, we must also investigate the constantly changing context of sustainable mobility, the socio-cultural framework, the economic and environmental implications. With the help of trend scouts, materials experts and drivetrain wizards, we are trying to predict what makes the automotive world tick in 15 to 20 years' time.'

If you are looking for ways to keep your Audi performing at its best, follow these driving tips!

Audi

Drive with care everyday

  • Do not race your car’s engine during start-up.This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside.
  • Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation.
  • Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea. The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components.
  • Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped.
  • Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs.
  • Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber.
  • When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.
  • Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

The new Audi V-8 has come to town and is speeding past the competition going 0-60 in 3.5 seconds!

Audi

Audi’s new twin-turbo 4.0-liter, aka EA 82.

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the EA in the new 420-hp, 406-lb-ft S6 and S7, and the 520-hp, 481-lb-ft S8 , and, well, whoa. Try 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and the quarter in 11.8 at 118.3 mph. Yes, it’s that quick.

To get a better understanding of the EA, I asked the man with the answers — Juergen Koenigstedt, head of Audi’s V-8/V-10 engines.

RK: Did you decide from the start that the new-gen Audi V-8 was going to be a 4.0-liter turbo?

JK: It was very clear that an eight-cylinder would have 4.0-liter displacement, because we have normally 500 cubic-centimeters volume in each cylinder — as in our 2.0-liter turbo engines — and it makes sense to make it in this way. We had a lot of discussion what would be the right way to have the turbo — outside or in the vee. That was a big question at the beginning and, from our point of view, this position of the turbocharger in the vee has so much advantage. You have very short way from the turbo over the intercooler into the engine. A small volume and, therefore, the throttle response is very good. Turbo lag is none.

RK: Was there any discussion about putting this new 4.0-liter in the refreshed Audi R8?

JK: Every time you have this discussion, because a few people love naturally aspirated engine with high revs and other people love turbocharged engines. From my point of view, for a real super sports car, the naturally aspirated engine, with this unbelievable throttle response and sound, is crying the high tune — that’s the R8.

RK: From the start of the Audi 4.0-liter project to now, how long was the process?

JK: Normally, we have two phases. One is the concept phase. This starts nearly four years before a project goes to start of production. And this concept phase, we have roughly 15 months. And after 15 months, you have everything together. You know how the engine will be, and you have your variables, your financial variables and so on. And then comes the decision. OK, is it good enough to make the development of the serious engines? In this case, you can say three and a half years.

RK: And how many test kilometers?

JK: I would say 10 million kilometers.

We want everyone to stay safe during Hurricane Sandy and hopefully these tips will help!

Sandy

Before a Hurricane

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.
  • Know your surroundings.
  • Learn the elevation level of your property and whether the land is flood-prone. This will help you know how your property will be affected when storm surge or tidal flooding are forecasted.
  • Identify levees and dams in your area and determine whether they pose a hazard to you.
  • Learn community hurricane evacuation routes and how to find higher ground. Determine where you would go and how you would get there if you needed to evacuate.
  • Make plans to secure your property:
  • Cover all of your home’s windows. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
  • Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage.
  • Reinforce your garage doors; if wind enters a garage it can cause dangerous and expensive structural damage.
  • Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.
  • Install a generator for emergencies.
  • If in a high-rise building, be prepared to take shelter on or below the 10th floor.

During a Hurricane

  • Listen to the radio or TV for information.
  • Secure your home, close storm shutters and secure outdoor objects or bring them indoors.
  • Turn off utilities if instructed to do so. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed.
  • Turn off propane tanks
  • Avoid using the phone, except for serious emergencies.
  • Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purpose such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other larger containers with water.

You should evacuate under the following conditions:

If you are directed by local authorities to do so. Be sure to follow their instructions.

  • If you live in a mobile home or temporary structure – such shelter are particularly hazardous during hurricane no matter how well fastened to the ground.
  • If you live in a high-rise building – hurricane winds are stronger at higher elevations.
  • If you live on the coast, on a floodplain, near a river, or on an island waterway.

Read more about evacuating yourself and your family. If you are unable to evacuate, go to your wind-safe room. If you do not have one, follow these guidelines:

  • Stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows and glass doors.
  • Close all interior doors – secure and brace external doors.
  • Keep curtains and blinds closed. Do not be fooled if there is a lull; it could be the eye of the storm – winds will pick up again.
  • Take refuge in a small interior room, closet or hallway on the lowest level.
  • Lie on the floor under a table or another sturdy object.
  • Avoid elevators.

After a Hurricane

  • Continue listening to a NOAA Weather Radio or the local news for the latest updates.
  • Stay alert for extended rainfall and subsequent flooding even after the hurricane or tropical storm has ended.
  • If you have become separated from your family, use your family communications plan or contact FEMA or the American Red Cross.
    • FEMA has established the National Emergency Family Registry and Locator System (NEFRLS), which has been developed to help reunite families who are separated during a disaster. The NEFRLS system will enable displaced individuals the ability to enter personal information into a website database so that they can be located by others during a disaster.
    • The American Red Cross also maintains a database to help you find family. Contact the local American Red Cross chapter where you are staying for information. Do not contact the chapter in the disaster area.
  • If you evacuated, return home only when officials say it is safe.
  • If you cannot return home and have immediate housing needs. Text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter in your area (example: shelter 12345).
  • For those who have longer-term housing needs, FEMA offers several types of assistance, including services and grants to help people repair their homes and find replacement housing. Apply for assistance or search for information about housing rental resources
  • Drive only if necessary and avoid flooded roads and washed¬ out bridges. Stay off the streets. If you must go out watch for fallen objects; downed electrical wires; and weakened walls, bridges, roads, and sidewalks.
  • Keep away from loose or dangling power lines and report them immediately to the power company.
  • Walk carefully around the outside your home and check for loose power lines, gas leaks and structural damage before entering.
  • Stay out of any building if you smell gas, floodwaters remain around the building or your home was damaged by fire and the authorities have not declared it safe.
  • Inspect your home for damage. Take pictures of damage, both of the building and its contents, for insurance purposes. If you have any doubts about safety, have your residence inspected by a qualified building inspector or structural engineer before entering.
  • Use battery-powered flashlights in the dark. Do NOT use candles. Note: The flashlight should be turned on outside before entering - the battery may produce a spark that could ignite leaking gas, if present.
  • Watch your pets closely and keep them under your direct control. Watch out for wild animals, especially poisonous snakes. Use a stick to poke through debris.
  • Avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until you are sure it’s not contaminated.
  • Check refrigerated food for spoilage. If in doubt, throw it out.
  • Wear protective clothing and be cautious when cleaning up to avoid injury.
  • Use the telephone only for emergency calls.
  • NEVER use a generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, sheds, or similar areas, even when using fans or opening doors and windows for ventilation. Deadly levels of carbon monoxide can quickly build up in these areas and can linger for hours, even after the generator has shut off.

Audi has gained valuable knowledge about electric mobility from its reseach car, the F12

Audi

Idea platform for electric mobility

The e performance research project has concluded after three years of work. Audi collaborated with Bosch and several institutes at the RWTH Aachen University to develop a technology platform that is a major advance for electric mobility. The platform’s modules can be used in a variety of electric-powered automobiles. One such vehicle is the sporty “e Sport” technology platform.

Electric drives represent a key topic for the mobility of the future. The Ingolstadt carmaker therefore launched the e performance project on the premises of Audi Electronics Venture GmbH (AEV) on October 1, 2009. The objective: a scalable systems architecture for electric-powered cars, a flexible technology platform that also includes a plug-in hybrid drive. It should be suitable for use in everything from a sports car to a sedan to a city car.

Experts from both industry and academia were involved in the project, which had a budget of €36 million. The engineers from AUDI AG and Audi Electronics Venture collaborated closely with Robert Bosch GmbH, Bosch Engineering GmbH and three institutes of RWTH Aachen University: the Institute of Automotive Engineering (ika), the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) and the Institute of Electrical Machines (IEM). The technical universities of Munich, Dresden and Ilmenau, Leibniz University Hanover, the Fraunhofer institutes IESE and IISB as well as Forschungsgesellschaft Kraftfahrwesen mbH Aachen were also members of the consortium. The German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) supported e performance with some €23 million.

“Our team united engineering art, creativity and a portion of lateral thinking,” says Dr. Christian Allmann, one of the project managers. “Young, independent free-thinkers worked together with the experts from the Technical Development departments at Audi and Bosch. We enjoyed a constant sharing of our respective knowledge and different work cultures.” “The project was very dynamic with respect to personnel and technologies, resulting in a very flexible collaboration with open interfaces,” adds Martin Schüssler, Allmann’s colleague.

e performance was broken down into a dozen work packages from the energy storage system to the control concept to dynamic stability control. In the initial phases, the participants worked mostly with advanced simulation tools, then they built submodules and finally a drivable car, the F12. The sports car looks like a production Audi R8 on the outside, but it is purely electric-powered. The F12 represents the “e Sport” model within the modular system platform.

One of the key subject areas of the project was the high-voltage battery. In the F12, it comprises two separate blocks with an overall capacity of more than 38 kWh. Each block is made up of 200 macrocells. The beveled walls allow the macrocells to shift relative to one another for additional safety in the event of an accident. Cast aluminum sections in the battery system absorb a majority of the crash energy. Computations and initial tests on the component level indicate that this innovative safety concept can even withstand a side impact with pole.

The research car is powered by three different electric motors, each of which can be controlled separately. During slow driving, only the synchronous motor at the front axle is active. At higher speeds, the performance-optimized asynchronous motors at the rear axle come into play. Together the three electric motors produce 150 kW (204 hp) and 550 Nm (405.66 lb-ft) of torque. Their interaction makes the e Sport a fully electric quattro.

Another of the technology platform’s innovations is the switchable high-voltage electrical system. The two batteries deliver different output voltages of 144 or 216 volts. The uniform system voltage required is provided by means of a DC/DC converter. Under part load, the voltage is around 200 volts to maximize efficiency. With increasing power demand and speed, this increases to as much as 440 volts.

The F12 also uses an efficient heat pump for the thermal management of the drive system and the interior. It regulates the temperature of the batteries depending on the situation and can also store heat in them so that less energy is required to heat the interior the next time the car is driven.

The F12 driver controls basic drive functions – Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive – by operating buttons on the center tunnel. All other operations are controlled via a tablet computer that can be removed from the center console. A user-programmable instrument cluster presents all key information in high resolution.

“From the very beginning, our initiative was the largest interdisciplinary research project in Germany for electric cars,” concludes Christian Allmann. “Everyone who was involved gained competence and provided valuable qualification among themselves according to the ‘open innovation’ principle, including for the employees at the companies and universities.” This is also reflected in the 20 degree theses and 50 doctoral theses that resulted from the project.

Thanks to modern development tools and innovative knowledge management, the project partners were able to network very flexibly. The researchers used cameras to document each design step and made their knowledge available on a server accessible to all collaboration partners throughout Germany. This transparency and tight networking made e performance into a research project with a profound halo effect for Germany as a base of research and industry. The partnerships did not end with the completion of the F12. The first follow-up projects focusing on specific technical topics such as thermal management have already begun. Individual solutions, such as the CFRP housing for the rear battery, show good prospects for later production use. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research wants to continue to support the development of new automobile concepts, primarily in the areas of the battery, high-performance electronics systems and overall energy management.

Put your driving skills to the test in a drag race, slalom course, or cornering session!

Audi

Audi offers training to be a better driver

Trying to improve your driving skills is never a bad thing.

There are many places to get instruction, including programs put on by some of the manufacturers.

The German automaker offers what it calls the Audi Driving Experience, which debuted in Canada in fall 2011. It returns this fall, with stops in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

During the winter, the Audi Driving Experience will also be on tour across the country, providing instruction on handling winter conditions.

In Montreal, the event – which is offered in half-day and full-day sessions - was held at the Circuit ICAR in Mirabel Oct. 10-14. It then moves on to the Toronto area Oct. 18-25 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The last stop is in Vancouver Nov. 7-11.

Before the event opened to the public, media representatives were given a chance to get behind the wheel for an experience of their own.

And the star of the show is a 2013 Audi S4, a sporty sedan that has plenty of power thanks to a 3.0-litre TFSI V6 engine that produces 333 horsepower and 325 foot-pounds of torque.

As part of the experience, drivers are given some in-class instruction, including how to properly seat yourself behind the wheel. It’s something that many drivers do improperly, said Richard Spenard, one of the instructors at the event and an experienced race-car driver.

Afterward, participants get to the fun portions of the day.

They include drag racing, slalom courses and a cornering session on the track that teaches you the importance of proper vision.

While those are fun events, the program also has two elements that can be applied to everyday driving.

The first is how to correct the vehicle when you lose control as a result of understeer, which can happen when hydroplaning.

After you have mastered that, instructors take you to an obstacle course that teaches you the importance of peripheral vision when it comes to obstacle avoidance.

When travelling at 50 km/h, drivers are expected to react to a flag raised by an instructor and manoeuvring in the opposite direction and stopping safely, avoiding a possibly fatal collision.

There are plenty of real-world applications of these exercises, and every driver will benefit from learning how to handle a vehicle in these situations.

After all that hard work, participants can unwind in a hot lap around the track as a passenger in an Audi R8.

A half-day course (4.5 hours) costs $395 (plus tax) and a full-day course (eight hours) is $780.
